Imagine being able to capture an entire scene in a way a regular camera can’t. With one click of a button the complete setting is photographed. This is possible with a 360-degree camera, or an “omnidirectional camera.” My favorite 360-degree cameras are RICOH THETA.

What is a 360-degree camera

A 360-degree camera has a field of view that covers a full circle in the horizontal plane. This means you can capture an entire setting, all 360-degrees, and it doesn’t matter where you point the camera!

With 360-degree imaging, your photo is not a flat rectangle, it’s spherical. When you view a 360-degree image you are basically in the center of the photo (or sphere). You can move the image around, typically by dragging your finger across a touchscreen.

If you’re looking to invest in a 360-degree camera, I highly recommend the RICOH THETA brand.

RICOH THETA cameras have a simple design and they’re very easy to use. One click of a button takes the photo, and you don’t have to worry about camera angle, camera tilt, or settings.

I recently tried my hand shooting with a RICOH THETA 360-degree camera and really enjoyed the experience. A THETA app compliments the camera and is easy to download on a smartphone.  Through this app you can see a live view to set up your shot. I used a selfie stick and the self timer mode to create my images.

Clicking a button in the app takes the photo, and the camera gives a 5 second countdown if you use self timer mode. After the photo has been taken you can view it within the app, and download and transfer it as you’d like.

The first time I used the RICOH THETA I took it to a marsh on Amelia Island, Florida. I wanted to capture the sunset over the mash and knew that a 360-degree image would be great to showcase the entire scene. I was pleasantly surprised at the ease of use. It was simple to learn how to work the app and the camera; and it truly is a “one click” camera.

The RICOH THETA is very useful where you’re somewhere with a lot of setting to capture. Whether you’re in nature, shooting a cityscape or even photographing a large group. One of my favorite places to use the camera is on my balcony in New York City. I’m on the 27th floor of an apartment building right in the middle of Manhattan. My view overlooks The Empire State Building and other important landmarks. The RICOH THETA allowed me to take great photos that captured the entirety of my Manhattan skyline view. The 360-degree images really add something special that a flat photo just can’t. It’s fun to use the touchscreen and move the image around to better view New York’s iconic buildings.

I love RICOH THETA 360-degree cameras for their sleek design. They’re lightweight, which is perfect for travel! As a blogger who is always on the go, it’s important that my gear is portable and easy to take on adventures.

RICOH THETA cameras don’t sacrifice quality for design, which is key. The cameras have two ultra-wide lenses that capture all angles of a scene. With a 360-degree camera you can truly capture the grandness of a setting, something even a wide angle lens on a regular camera can’t do. I’m excited to try 360-degree photography in more locations in the future. Imagine capturing The Grand Canyon or Bali’s rice terraces with 360-degree camera technology!

I really enjoyed shooting with the RICOH THETA 360-degree camera. It fills a unique void between regular photography and video. I love the immersive nature of the photographs and know that a 360-degree will be a staple in my travel photography arsenal for years to come!
