Now that it’s August, the city has pretty much hit its peek boiling point (literally). It’s hot, humid and muggy here. Don’t even think about walking a long distance outside if you don’t want to be dripping in sweat. Not that I’m complaining, I love summer in NYC, but it definitely can be intense. One of my favorite ways to cool down (aside from randomly running into building lobbies for a burst of AC) is eating ice cream.
So many fun ice cream shops have opened over the past few years, making everything from rolled ice cream, giant egg waffle cones, and shaved cream ice a thing. Below I’m sharing my favorite spots to get a sweet, cold fix in the summer heat.
Eggloo is a new spot in Chinatown that features handmade ice cream served in Hong Kong egg waffles. Toppings are unlimited and you can pile as much as you want to top your ice cream waffle.
Ten Below specializes in rolled ice cream. An ice cream base is poured onto a cold surface and items are mixed in to create a flavor (I got strawberries and graham crackers!). The mixture then freezes and is rolled off the cold surface into your cup!
Big Gay Ice Cream is one of my favorite spots for fun soft serve combos. Their unique pairings are so tasty and you can’t help but smile at the branding! My go-to here is the Bea Arthur, vanilla soft serve topped with dulce de leche and crushed Nilla Wafers.
If you’re craving ice cream on the go, nothing beats a classic cone from the Mr. Softee ice cream truck! You can’t go wrong with vanilla soft serve cherry dipped with sprinkles.
What’s your favorite way to beat the summer heat?
