EXPLORING RINCON, PUERTO RICO

Looking to experience something different in Puerto Rico? Head to the island’s west coast for rustic charm and laid back vibes in the surfing town of Rincon! Here’s my Darling Passport travel guide to Rincon, Puerto Rico.

Getting There

There are two airports near Rincon, Aguadilla and Mayaguez. Aguadilla is about 40 minutes from Rincon and has direct flights from New York. The flights are at very odd times though (arriving at 4:00a and departing at 6:00a!) Mayaguez is a little closer to Rincon and has flights at more normal times, but you will likely have a connection in San Juan and fly on a small puddle jumper into Mayaguez.

Where To Eat

I loved starting every morning with an iced latte from Jake’s Java, a little coffee window across from Sandy Beach. Pool Bar Sushi was a highlight of our time in Rincon. The restaurant’s tables are situated around a pool, and there’s a huge screen hanging over it playing surf movies. The sushi was amazing and super fresh too! Jack’s Shack, a food truck set on a cliff overlooking the ocean, was a group favorite. We all fell in love with the fish tacos and stopped by the truck at least once a day. La Copa Ilena is right on the beach and a great spot for sunset cocktails and appetizers.

Where To Stay

Part of Rincon’s charm is that it’s not really built up. You won’t find big resorts lining the beaches here! Most people rent houses and condos (check out HomeAway) but there are some boutique hotel options if you prefer to go that route. The Horned Dorset is a gorgeous luxury boutique hotel that’s sure to provide a special stay in Rincon. We stopped by to check it out and enjoyed having drinks on the hotel’s spectacular patio.

What To Do

Surf Lessons- Rincon is known as a surfing destination, so why not try your hand at the sport? The waves can definitely be intimidating but there are certain beaches that are better for beginners. There are a bunch of instructors and surf schools around Rincon, but I recommend Rincon Surf School.

Beach Hop- Of course there is no shortage of gorgeous beaches. Some of our favorites were Sandy Beach, Domes Beach and Almond Beach.

Explore San German- San German is one of the oldest towns in Puerto Rico (second oldest behind San Juan). It’s an adorable town to walk around and take in the historic architecture and gorgeous vistas.

Visit Cabo Rojo- You can find naturally PINK water in Cabo Rojo! I wrote about my experience visiting the pink lake here. One of most spectacular beaches on the west coast is also located in Cabo Rojo, Playa Sucia.
