My last post on NorCal is about restaurants in Wine Country. Much like picking which wineries to visit, picking which restaurants to go to is not easy. There are so many amazing choices, and with a limited amount of days (and only three meals a day… right?) it’s hard to fit all the great options in. Here are two very different restaurants that we visited and loved during our trip.
The Fremont Diner is set along the rolling hills and gorgeous vistas of Highway 121 between Napa and Sonoma. It’s easy to miss the restaurant and mistake it for nothing special. The wood building looks run down with a rusty old truck parked outside… but definitely don’t bypass this gem. The Fremont Diner is a nostalgic and homey place with delicious farm-to-table comfort food. There are seats indoors and a large backyard filled with picnic tables. It’s a great spot to hit for a filling brunch before a day of wine tasting. I’ve been on both of my trips to wine country, and can’t imagine a stop in Sonoma without grabbing a bite at Fremont. Some favorite dishes include the biscuits with apple butter, the Nashville style chicken and the mac and cheese.
Ad Hoc is a restaurant in the adorable town of Yountville, which is often called the “culinary capital of Napa.” It’s a casual spot from Thomas Keller (of The French Laundry) and is a great choice if you’re interested in fine dining but can’t nab a French Laundry reservation. The space is sleek and minimalistic, and they serve one four-course family style menu each night. The staff was wonderful and the food was so fresh and cooked perfectly. Ad Hoc also has a very creative cocktail list if you want to take a break from wine.
